NYSBA Civics Convocation: Safeguarding Democracy in a Digital World

NYSEC had the opportunity to be panelists at the New York State Bar Association’s Convocation on Media Literacy Education: Safeguarding Democracy in a Digital World. The discussion centered on how to incorporate media literacy education into the learning experience of New York State students, an issue that is central to NYSEC’s mission.

NYSEC served on the last panel: Where Do We Go From Here? NYSEC was joined by Nan Eileen Mead, the Co-Director of DemocracyReady NY, Greg Fredricks from PNW BOCES, and Nicholas D’Amuro from Genesee Valley BOCES, who all shared ideas about how schools can help students think critically and engage responsibly with media sources.

We could not be more grateful to Jay Worona and Gail Ehrlich for inviting us to this amazing event. We are also appreciative of multiple education leaders, including Betty Rosa, the NYS Commissioner of Education; Senator Shelley Mayer, Chair of the Senate Education Committee; and Melinda Person, the President of NYSUT; who all spoke during the day. Helping students navigate today’s digital world with curiosity and integrity is essential to safeguarding democracy, and we’re proud that NYSEC could be part of this conversation.
